Synopsis

Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee takes the helm for this adaptation of an Eileen Chang story set in World War II-era Shanghai and detailing the political intrigue that surrounds a powerful political figure named Mr. Yee (Tony Leung). The year is 1942, and the Japanese continue to occupy Shanghai. As the sophicticated Mrs. Mak enters a café, she places a call, sets at a table, and allows her memory to drift back to 1938. Back then, Mrs. Mak was known as Wong Chia Chi (Tang Wei). Wong was a shy college freshman whose father had recently fled to England. At the university, Wong makes the acquaintance of fellow student Kuang Yu Min (Wang Leehom) - who has founded a drama society at the school in order to encourage patriotism. It doesn't take long before talented actress Wong becomes the troupe's leading lady, her soulful performances inspiring to both the theater audience and the smitten Kuang. But Kuang isn't just a theater maven - he's a revolutionary as well. Recently, Kuang has assembled a core group of students in order to carry out a bold plan to assassinate top Japanese collaborator Mr. Yee (Tony Leung). Each student will have an important role to play, with Wong once again stepping into the spotlight as leading lady Mrs. Mak. The plan is for Mrs. Mak to befriend Mr. Yee's wife (Joan Chen), and slowly gain the collaborator's trust before tempting him into an affair. While at first the plan goes exactly as scripted, things suddenly take a deadly turn and Wong is forced to abandon her role and emigrate from Hong Kong. Later, in 1941, the occupation shows no signs of ceasing and Wong is simply drifting through her days. Much to her surprise, the former actress finds Kuang requesting that she once again assume the role of Mrs. Mak. Kuang is now part of an organized resistance movement, and Mr. Yee has recently become head of the collaborationist secret service - making him a key member of the puppet government. Now, as Wong once again assumes the role of Mrs. Mak in order to gain intimate access to her dangerous prey, she must struggle with her own identity in order to pull off the performance of a lifetime.
